How do I know when a CPI event is needed?
The easiest way to know if a CPI event is required is to review available metrics and/or standards. Is the organization (or process) meeting goals/standards? Most processes have associated data, but may not be currently tracked or measured. If the CCO is engaged to assist in resolving a problem, always identify and gather supporting data. This will help prove a problem exists.
To fix problems or implement change requires the affected organization to “pay up front”. Meaning, the unit must commit the time and effort of personnel. Understanding whether to suggest the team conducts a Rapid Improvement Event (3-5 days), construct a Value Stream Map and Analysis (3-5 days), or Just-Do-it (1 day) is important in ensuring proper time is allocated.
Remember, a CPI event does not need to be a several day affair. Ideally, you would like to schedule the event for the required, uninterrupted number of days; however, at times the event will need to be conducted “piecemeal” fashion. This may be far from ideal for the facilitator, but remain flexible and ensure the team is fully productive when they are together. What is important is taking advantage of the knowledge, insight, and ideas from the team members when you do meet.
