Overview
Point Paper on CPI Training Targets (2020)
Units are NOT required to submit waivers for not maintaining 1% Black Belt (BB) and 5% Green Belt (GB) CPI trained personnel
Directives:
DoDI 5010.43, Implementation and Management of the DoD-Wide CPI/Lean Six Sigma (CPI/LSS) Program, Enclosure 2, details CPI training targets for DoD components consisting of at least 1% BB and 5% GB of an organization’s total onboard population
AFI 38-401, Continuous Process Improvement, mirrors the intent of DoDI 5010.43 with a target of 1% BB and 5% GB trained practitioners
AFI 38-401, para 2.10.5, instructs the monitoring of training progress
AFI 38-401, para 2.10.7, instructs the development of a training cadre per DoDI target
Goal:
Units should nominate and maintain a cadre of BB/GB trained personnel from all career fields in order to provide commanders with skilled CPI2 practitioners necessary to:
Establish a Lean and Innovative mindset for the organization
Monitor programs and processes for deficiencies and trends
Establish improvement goals and objectives
Assist supervisors and Airmen in solving problems
Definitions:
Total Force on-board population: 685,000
DAF BB requirement: 6,850
DAF GB requirement: 34,250
Deadline/Suspense: None listed in any publication
Training Targets:
Not linearly applied to each unit
Traditional Reserve and Guard should allow full credit for civilian training equivalency and document the capability on the CPI Portal
Active Duty training goals should exceed targets to account for limited training availability for traditional Reserve and Guard
Capacity:
Management and scheduling of all CPI2 courses centralized at SAF/MG
DAF GB production recently switched to web-based eLearning
First 6 months: >3,200 enrolled; over 550 training completed
Previous annual totals: approximately 2,000/year “trained”
HQ analysis of graduates indicated excessive variation in KSA and capabilities
DAF BB production is currently limited to approximately 200 trained/year
eLearning pilot is in early release/testing
Both Services and all MAJCOMs need to produce certified instructors to ensure an uninterrupted training schedule
Final numbers being determined by SAF/MGB

SEIs that can be obtained for completing the various levels of CPI Certification
Upon receiving your certificate for training, and on through the various levels of certification, there are SEIs that may be requested to be associated to you. The Wing Process Owner(WPO) should fill out an AF Form 2096 to add SEIs as certificates are received, but all interested in pursuing higher levels of certification should be aware of this and reach out to the WPO if they do not see something in a timely matter upon certificate submission.
This list can also be found in the Enlisted Classification Guide located on myPERS.
